“Hello NNE Chapter Members:
On March 16, SWANA issued a press release summarizing our 2019 fatality data, which included at least 53 solid waste worker deaths in the United States and Canada. The number of worker fatalities recorded in 2019 was fewer than in 2018, but was above the historical average. The most common cause of death was being struck by one’s own waste vehicle, followed by single vehicle accidents involving only a waste vehicle. Over 40 percent of worker fatalities were a result of one of these two causes.
It has a summary by type of solid waste / recycling operation, a comparison of total #’s from 2018 to 2019, and an interactive map which provides additional information by area.
Please be healthy and safe, and take the proper precautions related to COVID-19. Thanks.
SWANA 2019 Solid Waste Fatality Data
Sincerely, Al.”
